He was thinking of something. He gazed ahead. He was a smart, serious, and patriotic man. He might in trouble of his country or think of how to make his country better. Sky made he look a little bit worried.

1>.Jacques Cartier was a French explover who claimed what is now Canada for France.
2>. He was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River, which he named "The Country of Canadas", after the Iroquois names for the two big settlements he saw at Stadacona (Quebec City) and at Hochelaga (Montreal Island).
3>.Jacques Cartier was born in 1491 in Saint-Malo, the port on the extreme north-east coast of Brittany.
4>.Cartier, who was a respectable mariner, improved his social status in 1520 by marrying Mary Catherine des Granches, member of a leading family.
5>.In 1532, the year the Duchy of Brittany was formally united with France in the Edict of Union, Cartier was introduced to King Francis I by Jean le Veneur, bishop of Saint-Malo and abbot of Mont-Saint-Michel, at the Manoir de Brion.
6>.In 1534, Cartier set sail under a commission from the king, hoping to discover a western passage to the wealthy markets of Asia.
7>.Jacques Cartier set sail for a second voyage on May 19 of the following year with three ships, 110 men, and the two native boys.
8>.Reaching the St. Lawrence, he sailed up-river for the first time, and reached the Iroquoian village of Stadacona, where Chief Donnacona was reunited with his two sons.
9>.Jacques Cartier left his main ships in a harbour close to Stadacona, and used his smallest ship to continue up-river and visit Hochelaga (now Montreal) where he arrived October 2, 1535.
10>.On October 17, 1540, Francis I ordered the Breton navigator to return to Canada to lend weight to a colonization project of which he would be "captain general".
3. Why is he important for the history of Canada?
Because he named Canada, and did something that is good for Canada and France's relationship.
4. When was Cartier sent to Canada? Why was he sent to explore? Who sent him?
In 1534, the king sent him to Canada, because hoping to discover a western passage to the wealthy markets of Asia.

He explored parts of Newfoundland, the areas now the Canadian Atlantic provinces and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. During one stop at Îles aux Oiseaux (Islands of the Birds, now the Rochers-aux-Oiseaux federal bird sanctuary, northeast of Brion Island in the Magdalen Islands).His third encounter took place on the shores of Gaspé Bay with the St. Lawrence Iroquoians.Cartier returned to France in September 1534, sure that he had reached an Asian coast.

When he arrived at Canada, he saw men were standing on the beach. He asked his partners to talk to the native people. He set a cross on the beach. The leader in Canada was angry because of it. He told his two son to go to meet the king in France. Two son learnt a lot, and come back. And then, the leader accepted Jacques Cartier.

b. What did you learn from this video in 5-8 sentences?
Jacques Cartier drove the boat on ocean. He found a new and large island. There were native people lived in. They had plenty foods to eat. Jacques Cartier didn't want to leave there, but he had to went back to France. Unluckily, he met the frozen rain, he couldn't arrive at France right away. And some members in Jacques Cartier's group had scurvy and died. Luckily, Donnaconna came to help them, and gave them special soup to make them better. Jacques Cartier was very happy. Finally, he took Donnaconna to France.

9. What happened to Donnaconna?
Jacques Cartier took Donnaconna to France, and Donnaconna never came back.
10. How would you feel if you were Donnaconna or the Iroquois people? Would you be friends with the French after this experience?
If I am Donnaconna, I will angry with them. They are rude men. After this experience, I would not be friends with the French.
