Sky's Mood

Sky has her own secrets

Like candies;

like tears;

like purified water

The sun is going down, stars are glinting

These secrets become many warm or cold colours

and are shown in her mood

When the sun shines bright in the world

Gold, red, orange, pink...

Sky's warm tone;

her sweet and beatific secrets;

her canty mood

When moon's shadow appears bit by bit

Argenteous, dark blue, purplr...

Sky's cool tone;

her sad secrets;

her mopish mood

When the midnight is coming;

when ocean waves collide;

when everyone is going to their dreams

Sky is cool

she is grey or transparent

like purified water

The sun goes down to the west, the stars will shine upon you

Sky's secrets;

sky's mood

Can you guess?

Colourful sky

a member in Canadian landscape

A mysterious girl

1. What is an alliance? What does this word mean?Great traders themselves, the Hurons navigated the rivers of Central Canada and were very prosperous. They would become the leading source of furs for the French.

Meaning 1: The state of being allied or confederated.
Meaning 2: A connection based on kinship or marriage or common interest.
Meaning 3: An organization of people (or countries) involved in a pact or treaty.
Meaning 4: A formal agreement establishing an association or alliance between nations or other groups to achieve a particular aim.
Meaning 5: The act of forming an alliance or confederation.
An alliance is a formal relationship between two or more parties to pursue a set of agreed upon goals or to meet a critical business need while remaining independent organizations.

2. Why would Champlain want to form an alliance with the Hurons?

Champlain wanted to form an alliance with the Hurons, the most important reason is he can get benefits. Forming an alliance can expand the fur trade in the world, because they have an immovable company-- the alliance. Champlain also can consolidate his the king of the fur's status. If Champlain formed an alliance, it's easier and more convenient for fur trade. Because they can have a legitimate approach.

3. This is a picture of Champlain and his Huron allies on the left fighting the Iroquois. This is one of the earliest images of Europeans and First Nations people interacting.a. Explain what you see in the picture in 3-5 sentences. Look carefully at the picture.b. Do you think this is a realistic image of the situation? Explain why or why not in 5-8 sentences.

It's two groups of people are fighting. Oh~~! A war!! Iroquois' weapons are bow and arrow (a little bit lagging...), and they fights without clothes, looks like the primitive. Another group of people wear armors and they are Champlain and his Huron allies. They use their guns to kill several people.

Yes, it is a realistic image of the situation. War is ferocious and sad. Gap of the strength between Iroquois and Champlain and his Huron allies is very big. Although there are many Iroquois, they still have many partners are killed. Their weapon is one of the most important reasons that depend on their victory or defeat. So, this is a realistic image of the situation.

4. The Hurons had many economic advantages because of their geographic location and territory. They were located on the southern shore of Georgian Bay, where the fishing was excellent.

a. Find a map of Georgian Bay. Explain where this bay is.
http://www.muskieontario.com/georgianbay.html
It's near the French River and Thrity Thousand Island. On this map, it is on Killamey Mountain Lodge's right, Pleasant Cove Resort' s left.

b. Translate the word bay.

5 . Find a photograph of Georgian Bay that you like. Explain why you like it in 3-5 sentences.The vegetation of this region includes mixed forests, meadows, and fields. The sandy soil was perfect for planting corn, squash, pumpkins, and beans.

I like this photograph of Georgian Bay. Vegetation grows frondently. Grey beside the river. The colour of the river is sky blue. The white horizon make people can know where sky is and where the river is. Water is very clean, people can see the bottom clearly though water.

6. Take a look at this piece of Canadian Art called "Stormy Weather". The artist is Frederick Varley. He illustrated the stormy weather of Georgian Bay.
a. How do you feel when you see this painting? Explain in 5-8 sentences. Tell me why you feel that way.
When I see this painting, I feel a little bit sad and depressive. It makes me guess the artist's mood is terrible. Sky should be blue, clean and bright, but in this painting, the colour of sky is dark and is negative colours. The river is not peaceful at all. A tree beside the river looks really grievous like a person. Environment is silent but dejected. People can't find esperance and vitality in this picture. So I feel sad and depressive.

7. This is a poem by A.J.M Smith. It was put together with this image on a past provincial exam.
a. When you read this poem, how do you feel about the Canadian landscape? Explain in 10-12 sentences. Think deep and be creative.

The Lonely LandA.J.M. Smith
Cedar and jagged fir
uplift sharp barbs
against the gray
and cloud-piled sky;
and in the bay
blown spume and windrift
and thin, bitter spray
snap
at the whirling sky;
and the pine trees
lean one way.
A wild duck calls
to her mate,
and ragged
and passionate tones
stagger and fall,
and recover,
and stagger and fall,
on these stones -
are lost
in the lapping of water
on smooth, flat stones.
This is a beauty
of dissonance,
this resonance
of stony strand,
this smoky cry
curled over a black pine
like a broken
and wind-battered branch
when the wind
bends the tops of the pine
like a broken
and wind-battered branch
when the wind
bends the tops of the pines
and curdles the sky
from the north.
This is the beauty
of strength
broken by strength
and still strong

When I read this poem, I felt that Canadian landscape was beautiful and different with the other countries. Canada is a country that is very cold. But snow also can cause a nice landscape that is another beauteousness. Many people think that cities are warm and with so many flowers, trees, rivers and green mountains are beautiful. However, a city is surrounded by snow that is like a white world is also really beautiful. It doesn't have many colours, just is white and blue. Many kinds of trees are growing there, deers, rabbits are living there. Although the weather often is snowy or rainy, although sky often is grey, it still gives people a peaceful, silent and comfortable feelings. Air is clean, though it is a little bit cold; sky is clean, though sometimes it is French grey. In that snow world, people still can see many green forests, towering trees, running streamlet, emerald green lichen. It is like spring, right? Therefore, Canadian landscape is a world that include spring and winter at the same time. It's a colour and drab landscape.

8. What did you learn in this lesson? Explain in 5-8 sentences.
In this lesson, I learnt a lot. At first, I knew what an alliance is and the meaning of it. I learnt the reason of Champlain wanted to form an alliance with the Hurons. Then, I know the conflict between Champlain and Iroquois by a picture of Champlain and his Huron allies on the left fighting the Iroquois. It reflects the situation. After it, I learnt about Georgian Bay. I knew where it is and what it is, and I knew the landscape in there. Finally, I got the conclusion of the Canadian landscape by a picture and a poem.

1. Find a map of the St. Lawrence River. Explain what you see in the picture in 3-5 sentences.
encarta.msn.com/media_461519234
On this map, I can know the St. Lawrence River is between the United States and Canada. Quebec, Ottawa and New York is beside the St. Lawrence River. This river is like a boundary line for two countries. Lake St.Pierre, Lake St. Fancis, Lake Champlain and Lake Ontario are the St. Lawrence River's bayous. They make of the St. Lawrence River. This map can make people know this river is an important river.

2. Find a photograph of the St. Lawrence River you like. Explain what you see in the picture in 3-5 sentences.
www.canada-photos.com/montreal-s
Twilight is coming. The city was dark. Lights are on. Sun shine will leave, but beautiful lights make the city brilliant again. The St. Lawrence River is peaceful now. A ship is on the river. Many high buildings surround the river. In this picture, here are three colour. Buildings are black(because sun goes down, we can't see their original colour clearly), the river is purple, and sky is orange. It sounds and looks like a landscape.
Sun is going up, sky is dyed by sun shine. It is red like fire. The colour of sky means daybreak will coming. The river have ripple. Peaceful wharf is waking up. It is a picture of the St. Lawrence River during the morning.

3. Why did Champlain choose to use a river for transportation? Explain in 3-5 sentences.
People can transport anything by ships. Rivers can extend through to many regions. For instance, the St. Lawrence River has many bayous in many different cities in Canada and the United States. Therefore, Champlain choosed to use a river for transportation.

4. Find a picture of Champlain's habitation at Quebec. Explain what you see in 5-8 sentences.

There are two pictures of Champlain's habitation at Quebec. One is inside, another one is outside. Champlain's habitation looks really big. A French flag is inserted the roof. This house also has two floors, like the other western buildings. Champlain's habitation also is an office building. We can know it by the first picture. Champlain was working hardly. Inside of the habitation is not gorgeous at all. It is simple. Many office supplies are in his office room, very entire. He might was drawing something by using pencil and compasses.(Drawing map? I guess.) A gun is on his desk, it reminds me of immoral trappers that kill animals and peel their fur.

5. The fort was a natural fort because Quebec had towering cliffs.
a.Find a picture of towering cliffs in Quebec. Search in Google using "Quebec and towering cliffs".

b. Why are the cliffs a natural fort? Explain in 3-5 sentences.
Because of the special geography in Quebec, there are too many cliffs. These cliffs become a natural fort. Fort is an instrument for protecting. Undulant cliffs can make enemies invade Quebec really hard. Enemies will spend more time to think of how to invade Quebec, and soldiers in Quebec will have more time to think of the better ways to protect their hometown. Therefore, the cliffs are a natural fort.

6. What did you learn today? Explain in 5-8 sentences.
I learnt the St. Lawrence River is an important river. It between Canada and the United States. Many well-known rivers are near it. It's a really good transportation. Scenery is beautiful at the St. Lawrence River. Especially morning and twilight. Then, I learnt Champlain's habitation at Quebec, it's a big house. So, maybe, he is a rich man, but inside is not very gorgeous. He worked really hard, he seemed to draw a map. After this, I learnt a natural fort--cliff, and know the reason why it can become a natural fort.
Bonus
1. There is a moat around Champlain's habitation. Why is that important?
It can protect Champlain and provide a better environment.
2. Can you find a picture of a moat? Post it.

Samuel De Champlain - Port Royal

1. Why would Samuel de Champlain want to have a monopoly on the fur trade? Explain in 3-5 sentences. What does monopoly mean?
The fur trade in that time was flourishing. Samuel de Champlain fur trade in Quebec, and Quebec becomes a fur trade city because of it. The trade's value is well-known. Therefore, the fur is precious, naturally, being a fur's main owner will get endless riches. Visibly, if he can have a monopoly on the fur trade, he can become the main owner by it.In the other words, he can be the king of the fur.
monopoly--Absolute control of all sales and distribution in a market by one firm, due to some barrier to entry of other firms, allowing the firm to sell at a higher price than the socially optimal price.

2. Why would the King want to set up French colonies in Canada? Explain in 3-5 sentences.
(A photo of the colony)
In history, countries could get many benefits from their colonies. Therefore, setting up French in Canada is an advantageous way for a king to increase his country's strength. Setting up French colonies in Canada can expand French territory, give France more manpower. French also can continue and expand their fur trade by it, and then make more money. Different surroundings have different useful resources. Canada has ample and useful resources, it can offer products that French really need. So, the king want to set up French colonies in Canada.
Champlain first attempted to create a small trading post called "Port Royal" in what is now Nova Scotia. It was not a great success because there was no business and the settlement was abandoned by 1607.

3. Can you find two pictures of Port Royal, Nova Scotia today on the Internet? What does it look like? Explain each picture in 5-8 sentences what you see.

There house are classical. It was set with old style. But this style is not outmoded, it looks beautiful and special yet. Sky is cerulean, grass is green and grow in everywhere. This natural environment foils the Port Royal, Nova Scotia more classical. Gray wall, gray windows, gray doors, gray roof, and red chimney. Very old but has special feelings.

www.flickr.com/photos/andrefoto/422113048/
This is the inside of Port Royal, Nova Scotia . Everything is made by wood. It reminds me of the ancient story in European, because the character usually lives in a small house that is like this picture. White and graceful picture frames are on the wall. The ancient lights make the room mysterious.

When the settlement was abandoned in 1607, some settlers were permitted to stay if they agreed not to work on the fur trade. They became highly skilled farmers and would form the colony of Acadia (as we have learned before).

2. What is the most memorable lesson you remember? (if you weren't here, maybe at another school)
The most memorable lesson I remember is "Living in region". We did many short shows about "Living in region". We looked information at Internet and did our Power Point very carefully. The event that made me very happy was taking a photo of my group. Every member in my group was happy and did funny movements. Really significative! When we showed our Power Point, I was nervous, I read the part that belonged to me loudly, but made a few mistakes. At last, our group grade was not bad. It's my most memorable lesson I remembered.
3. Think about your life as a student here since September. Have you changed? How?
I have changed a lot as a student here since September. I remembered before I went here, my English was not good at all. I was worried about my classes, homework, and communicating with teachers, because sometimes I couldn't understand when teachers talked. Luckily, many people helped me and told me it was easy to understand. After one week, sure enough I adapted my new environment. I soon realized I needed to know more English words. I bought a small notebook and started making notes about words which I didn't know. It was an useful way, I remembered many words that used continually. After a short spell , most of words that teachers said I could understand, I started working hardly. Now, although my English is not very well yet, it's better than before I am here. However, the bad news is I am not working hard at all now. My grade is goes down, I get bad marks of midterm. It motivates me a lot. And I decide to study hard, because I want to get good mark in the end of this term.

4. What is your goal for yourself by June? What is your plan to study?
I have already made a plan, because I don't want get this bad mark again. My goal for myself by June is I have to get A in Canadian Study, Science; get B in English10; finish Chinese homework on time. I will prepare carefully before I have exams. I often didn't prepare my exam in the past time. I will finish my homework earnestly and on time. I will spend time for revision everyday. I can't go to sleep right away when I arrive at home. It's really bad for my studying, because I usually can't wake up if I sleep. To be honest, I often couldn't achieve my plans. But I believe myself! In this time, I am sure I can achieve my plan!

5. What are you most proud of in school since September? Have you done your best?

I am proud of my speech in the last business class. I think I have done my best in that speech. I was very nervous when I speak in public or in front of the other students. I was afraid of making mistakes in my speech, because I was afraid my classmates would laugh at me. Therefore, while I was speaking in class, I would be nervous. And these things would happened on me: heart beat faster, forgot what I would say, shortness of breath, made many mistakes. In the last term, every group needed to make a speech in business class, before the speech day, I told Mr. Bob that didn't ask me questions, I would be nervous when I saw people's face and forgot what I should say. But Mr.Bob said I had to overcame this problem, I needed to practice more and he would asked me questions. At last, he said when I answered his question,I had to look at his face. So, I practice my parts over and over again. Finally, I did best in the speech.

Fnial Essay

Plan:

Big idea______ Exploration can cause conflict and misunderstanding

_____________Cabot went to Newfoundland and thought it was Asia

__to_________ Cartier went to Canada, named it and did the fur trade

Small idea____ Columbus went to North America and thought it was Asia

Exploration's Conflict and Misunderstanding
Mya
______Exploration can cause conflict and misunderstanding. When an explorer arrived at a new region, they usually did something according to their habits, but the native people might be misunderstand them because of their different habits. Conflict was be caused by it. For instance, Cabot went to Newfoundland and thought it was Asia, Cartier went to Canada, named it and did the fur trade, Columbus went to North America and thought it was Asia.

______Cabot was an Italian explorer. He would like to go to Asia. However, he arrived at another region, Newfoundland. He found fishes, the sod. Cabot wanted to go to a region, but he went with the wrong way, and he didn't know he made a mistake. It's a big misunderstanding. Exploration means go to one place that people never known or gone. So, people would go in a way that to another place. When the explorer arrived, he would according to that region's environment to get the first impression of the region that he wanted to arrived. So, exploration can cause the misunderstanding.

______Cartier went to Canada, named it and did the fur trade. Although he got on well with the leader, but I am sure before it, the stranger and the native people are not friends. The reasons are Cartier is a stranger, their languages are different, and the most important one is the explorer's possessive heart. Exploration can cause conflict and misunderstanding.

______Columbus wanted to go to China because of money. He had never gone to China before, and he made mistake on his way. After he arrived there, he was not friendly at all. He started bullying people. He made them become servants and manpower. He occupied the land and money. Although he took lots of resources to his country, he brought many harm to the region. The native people were angry, and they against. Visibly, conflict was happened.

______Cabot went to Newfoundland and thought it was Asia, Cartier went to Canada, named it and did the fur trade, Columbus went to North America and thought it was Asia. People can see, exploration can cause misunderstanding and conflict. Everyone does not like stranger, especially the explorer often did some bad events. Exploration is a good thing , also is a bad thing.
